S.H.A.P.E. Assessment Results
Thank you Bev Ness for taking the SHAPE Assessment. We encourage you to meet with a Church Leader that you respect, to go over your results, so that they can help you discover a place to serve in the church and/or community, and also to help you fine-tune your 5 Main Focuses/Priorities listed at the bottom of this email under the ‘Wrapping it up’ section. May God Bless You!

This gift’s evident in my life in the following ways:
This one has shown up #1 every time I’ve taken a spiritual gifts assessment. Goes along with my career of being a physician- desire to relieve suffering, coming alongside hurting people and listening to them.
This gift’s evident in my life in the following ways:
Giving of my musical talent to help others worship Christ through music. Giving of myself to someone in need. Giving of our resources where God directs.
This gift’s evident in my life in the following ways:
This one surprised me, though in hindsight, patients would comment that they felt better just by coming in to see me. Likely from being cheerful, listening and looking for the positive in a situation.
[H]eart
1. Medicine- unraveling the puzzles, getting to know the patients and helping them walk through their ailments- helping them feel better
2. Nature- whether it’s taking my grand dog or self on a daily walk, hiking through the woods, climbing a mountain. Enjoying God’s creation. In this same category is my love for dogs and animals. I’ve had pets nearly my entire life and a dog in the house for 18 years. I miss my fur babies!
3. Can baking and music be tied in the same category? I love to bake bread, cookies, desserts. The kitchen is one of my happy places along with listening to or being a part of a band. Playing piano at home is a stress reducer.
As a physician, I worked with patients ranging from 16 to over 100. I really enjoyed the older ladies, but on the same token, enjoyed the younger patients as well.
1) Love being part of a worship team! 2) Missions, whether it be flying to Peru and helping out in the orphanage or getting involved in medical missions locally or medical missions overseas.
Poverty/hunger
Health/fitness
Other – Abortion, homelessness, drug abuse/recovery, alcoholism, abuse/violence, at-risk children all strike a chord with me somewhat equally. Hurting people who need help.
[A]bilities
recently retired internal medicine physician
Medical technologist
For some reason, it is difficult for me to fill this box out.
Musically: play piano, flute, can site read music, sing- usually on key but definitely not solo material
Medical: solving “mysteries”, listening to patients, cheering patient’s up, offering advice, teaching them on their disease, improve their health, offer help
I would consider being a physician as teaching one on one on a daily basis. Did this for 20 years.
Visited Jared’s school when he was in the younger grades to teach them about the human body. I remember reading part of “Ms Frizzle” from “Magic School Bus” and then having some hands on fun with my stethoscope, reflex hammer, etc.
I “taught” an 18 -36 month Sunday School Class years ago. It was a disaster!
listening to people and trying to treat each as a child of God. I had some difficult patients and would pray prior to going in their room for God to help me love them as He does. Some of these difficult ones became my favorite!

Your Primary was ‘The Retriever’, with your Secondary coming in as ‘The Beaver’, and here are the descriptions of your Personalities, and how they can be used for God
Golden Retriever- Good at making friends. Very loyal. Retriever personalities do not like big changes. They look for security. Can be very sensitive. Very caring. Has deep relationships, but usually only a couple of close friends. Wants to be loved by everyone. Looks for appreciation. Works best in a limited situation with a steady work pattern.
Strength: Accommodating, calm, affirming
Weakness: Indecisive, indifferent, unable to express emotional, too soft on other people
Limitation: Seeing the need to be more assertive, holding others accountable
Beaver- Organized. Beavers think that there is a right way to do everything and they want to do it exactly that way. Beaver personalities are very creative. They desire to solve everything. Desire to take their time and do it right. Beavers do not like sudden changes. They need reassurance.
Strength: High standards, order, respect
Weakness: Unrealistic expectations of self & others, too perfect.
Limitation: Seeing the optimistic side of things, expressing flexibility
[E]xperience
My father was a minister in the Evangelical Covenant Church, so we went to church on a regular basis. In 5th grade, my Sunday School teacher, Ray Gonzales asked the class if we knew where we would go if we died today. He used the example of a loose brick from the church hitting one in the head, causing our death. I decided that day to give my life to Christ. While it was a “scare tactic”, it worked for me (God knew). Have learned much over the years. Would call it a “roller coaster”
Music ministry: pretty much on and off since high school. Accompanied the church choir that my mom directed and also played the piano (hymns) while mom played the organ. In the 1990’s, led a very small worship team and played keyboard.
in the early 2000’s onward, have consistently played piano or keyboard on the worship team: 12 years at New Hope Community Church, around 5 years at Fox River, Muskego branch and now at Lake Point.
Awana- was a co-leader for the “red” team high school girls. Enjoyed this, but had to decide between Awana or worship team as my work was becoming more time consuming.
Co-leader of Small Groups with Eric. He was the facilitator and I would bake treats. This was in Madison at High Pointe Church in the 1990’s.
At New Hope Community Church, we met in various homes and eventually the small group met at our home. I continued to bake treats.
Marrying the love of my life. God put us together, which makes it so cool!We complement each other and help each other out. Eric is very wise and discerning which has helped guide us in life decisions.
Being accepted into medical school. So many rich experiences and learning from patients. I used to be afraid of talking to people, but through being a physician, enjoyed the relationships built with patients over the years and the one-on-one or one-on two or four sessions.
Nature and animals: Rich camping experiences with mom, dad and my siblings. We camped in primitive National Forests, had to gather our own kindling for the fire (or mom and dad maybe wanted to keep us kids busy), hiked awesome trails and loved being outdoors. And I still do!!
Always had pets growing up and wanted a dog from day one. Mom and Dad said “when we move to the country, you can have a dog”. I never forgot that promise and when we DID move to the country at age 15, the first thing I said was “Now I get a dog!” And I did 🙂 Eric and I have had 2 other dogs for a total of 18 years.
Two miscarriages. These occurred after having Jared – was difficult getting pregnant with him. Then after meeting with infertility specialists being told the odds of becoming pregnant again, even with IVF were less than 5%. Was devastating news. But it’s a part of God’s plan for us and I can empathize with others who have gone through similar circumstances.
Depression- the miscarriages “tipped me over the edge”, if you will and I entered into deep depression. I truly felt, at times, that Eric and Jared would be better off without me. Thanks be to God for a loving husband who got me the right help and medication. Clinical depression is a real thing, as is anxiety, bipolar, schizophrenia. Not something we can “will” away or pray away, but God can guide us through the deep waters and provide health care professionals to provide the needed medication and guidance.
Eating Disorder. This came about with the miscarriages and depression. I’m not proud about it and somewhat ashamed of it. Again, my wise husband found help for me. Being anorexic is an addiction, similar to other addictions whether it be food, alcohol, drugs, exercise, porn, etc. Has certainly helped me to understand that addictions are extremely difficult and that one is never completely healed. There’s always that little nagging voice trying to get your attention. I understand why someone with alcohol problems says they are a recovering alcoholic. This life experience helped me in my professional life MANY times over. Thank you Lord!
