1. 1. Student Ministry- Teens are at the prime age to receive the Gospel and there is no age group in the church that is more open to accepting Christ, and consequently, sharing their faith with their peers.

2. 2. Leading Worship- I have always had a heart for worshiping and have always been guided by the fact that we were made for praising Almighty God.

3. 3. Evangelism- I view this as a form of worship and it is such an honor to share my faith with the lost. There is great joy to see someone accept the free gift of salvation and then to watch them grow in both faith and knowledge of Christ.

Where do I begin? All manor of youth related topics. I have been a consultant with MBC for churches on developing student ministry. I have led at Super Summer in Missouri and Tennessee. I have served on the board of Youthfront ( formerly Kansas City Youth for Christ) and helped develop a student-led campus ministry called First Priority, which is utilized nation-wide. I have served in many camps, schools, etc. over the past 30 years in student ministry.

Otter- Otters are very social creature. Otter personalities love people. They enjoys being popular and influencing and motivating others. Otter can sometimes be hurt when people do not like them. Otter personalities usually have lots of friends, but not deep relationships. They love to goof-off. (They are notorious for messy rooms.) Otters like to hurry and finish jobs. Lion- This personality likes to lead. The lion is good at making decisions and is very goal-oriented. They enjoy challenges, difficult assignments, and opportunity for advancement. Because lions are thinking of the goal, they can step on people to reach it. Lions can be very aggressive and competitive. Lions must learn not to be too bossy or to take charge in other’s affairs.

[E]xperience

As a teen, I claimed to be atheist. Upon attending a revival service with my girlfriend, who is now my wife, I was convicted by the evangelist’s message on eternity. After a lot of resisting the Holy Spirit, I finally made the decision to repent of my sin and give my life to Christ.

Meeting my wife and marrying her.

Seeing both of my children born, saved and baptized.

My first teaching experience at Super Summer. The students in my group were arguing and being quite hateful to each other. But, at this event, they were truly broken. They repented, weeping and broken. They restored harmony and went on to have a huge impact on their campus.

Being asked to resign from my position as youth pastor at FBC, West Plains, Mo. I was pretty seasoned and experienced by then and I was trying to keep several students from getting involved in a dangerous and unholy activity. Students and parents turned on me and I was asked to resign. Two weeks later, every member of the committee, including the pastor, was required to come to the police station to pick up their teen after a drug raid at a party. Some reached out to me, but the damage was done. I was devastated, as was my family and it still has some lasting effects on all of us.

The untimely death of a student has happened in my ministry unfortunately several times over the years. It is a time filled with grief, but also a time to motivate students to re-evaluate what is really important in life.

Car accident during my Senior year of high school. At the time, I was lost and running from God. I totaled a car so badly that there wasn’t an inch of it that wasn’t damaged, yet I walked away unharmed. The school bus passed the scene and the word was that I had been killed. I returned to class later that day to the amazement of everyone. The event caused me to serious think about death and what happens afterwards. God used it to make me realize how stupid I had been in my pride and rejection of Him. I have used this illustration many times with students.

Wrapping It Up

3. I would create a regional youth center for students to be able to hang, hear the gospel and avoid the many pitfalls they encounter.

5. I would financially support Logan Valley Christian Retreat in Ellington, Mo. in a way that would allow the ministry to continue there after the current managers retire.
