Your Primary was ‘The Beaver’, with your Secondary coming in as ‘The Retriever’, and here are the descriptions of your Personalities, and how they can be used for God
Beaver- Organized. Beavers think that there is a right way to do everything and they want to do it exactly that way. Beaver personalities are very creative. They desire to solve everything. Desire to take their time and do it right. Beavers do not like sudden changes. They need reassurance.
Strength: High standards, order, respect
Weakness: Unrealistic expectations of self & others, too perfect.
Limitation: Seeing the optimistic side of things, expressing flexibility
Golden Retriever- Good at making friends. Very loyal. Retriever personalities do not like big changes. They look for security. Can be very sensitive. Very caring. Has deep relationships, but usually only a couple of close friends. Wants to be loved by everyone. Looks for appreciation. Works best in a limited situation with a steady work pattern.
Strength: Accommodating, calm, affirming
Weakness: Indecisive, indifferent, unable to express emotional, too soft on other people
Limitation: Seeing the need to be more assertive, holding others accountable
[E]xperience
When I was a young boy, my four brothers and I walked to my grandparents’ Methodist church where I learned about Jesus in Sunday school. I fondly remember those little wooden chairs that fit me so well, and the lessons about sin, salvation, and God’s love. And the songs! — I felt like those songs were my prayers.
In the following years and through high school, though, I was in great turmoil. I could not stop sinning though I knew it was wrong. I was not taught about the things of God in my home and I was quite confused about life in general. An unbelieving adult in my life advised me to join to Air Force in order to “emotionally divorce myself from my family.” I enlisted in the Air Force – mostly to get away from home.
At my first assignment in New York I immediately got involved in the Chapel choir and was befriended by some Christians – a good thing because I was still struggling desperately with personal issues. I also visited different local churches and responded to altar calls or counseling opportunities to receive Christ as Savior. I wasn’t a “regular” anywhere so I lacked the follow-up I needed.
At my next assignment I received good training with the Navigators. As I steadily read and studied my Bible, I began to learn how great a salvation I had and I realized that in a little wooden chair I was saved. But without a doubt, the single most important influence in my life was the leader of this Navigator ministry in England. It was the accepting and loving relationship with Doug Moore, the welcome in his home by his gracious wife, and the example of his life that established me in the faith.
Meadowbrooke Baptist Church, Cheyenne, WY (6 years). Various home Bible studies, Sunday School, Elder Board.
Cornerstone Community Church, Waukegan, IL (5 years). Active various Sunday School and other events, member of Elders Board. Self-reported sin led to me leaving the Elder Board.
Grace Missionary Church, Zion, IL (2 years). Youth Pastor. Removed from that position after five months and told I was not gifted for that work.
Family Life Church, Waukegan, IL (5 years). Active member, leading Sunday School classes for kids and adults, occasional preaching, leadership board. Left this church for move to Philippines, then Missouri.
Miscellaneous: Many evangelistic services at Great Lakes Naval Training Center. I was a counselor at weekly evangelistic events and I delivered the message once. One weekend event at Cook County Jail with Bill Glass Prison Ministries. Other counseling work at one Louis Palau and one Billy Graham event. One ten-day mission trip to Guatemala during which we provided construction assistance on a library in the mountains for Isheal Indians and general assistance to Wycliffe translators. Leadership in Hospitality Houses in England, Japan, and Illinois. I led Bible studies, fellowship groups, and was involved with people in a non-professional counseling role. Previously a member of the Great Lakes Hospitality House Advisory Board.
Doug and Joy Moore, Navigator Missionaries to the military in England. By far, they have been the most important direction-setting people in my life.
Too many men to recount here — encouragers, friends, counselors by their words and their examples.
Trusting God’s strange leadership. Two most notable experiences: Being awakened by God and told I was going to Trinity College. Going to the Philippines to meet Fe, who is now my dear friend and wife.
1972-1976. Great confusion when a teenager. The aimlessness I remember (and that lingered for years more) makes me want to be rather direct with rudderless and misguided people.
2002. I had a heart attack and surgery with complications after which my doctor told me, “David, God has preserved your life for a reason.” I believed him.
2008. Divorced against my will.
