S.H.A.P.E. Assessment Results

Thank you Josh Dowell for taking the SHAPE Assessment. We encourage you to meet with a Church Leader that you respect, to go over your results, so that they can help you discover a place to serve in the church and/or community, and also to help you fine-tune your 5 Main Focuses/Priorities listed at the bottom of this email under the ‘Wrapping it up’ section. May God Bless You!

#1 Gift, Mercy Showing (62%)

This gift’s evident in my life in the following ways:
This was definitely Interesting to me that this is my number 1 spiritual gift, It was not what I would have chosen for myself. Nonetheless, I think it fits, I think I tend to see myself as a pretty compassionate person, and I bet mercy show plays a big role in that. In order for me to be compassionate, I think first I need to forgive or at least understand where they have been. Maybe showing mercy is just having a little empathy, a little understanding for someone in a rocky situation.

#2 Gift, Teaching (59%)

This gift’s evident in my life in the following ways:
I do not think this applies to teaching in the traditional sense. I think a better word would be mentoring. Walking alongside with and encouraging those younger than I (hint hint). I think of a classic youth intern or my kids I see at an apartment ministry, it isn’t so much about what I say, but about being there for them.

#3 Gift, Exhortation/Encouragement (56%)

This gift’s evident in my life in the following ways:
This does not surprise me as being my 3rd spiritual gift. Often I Pray that I may be someone who encourages others/ or a place for someone to feel the Love of God. I try to be someone who is always encouraging others to grow, especially when they feel down. As my dad says, it is always better to encourage others to move toward Christ, then simply call them out for sin.

Three things I love to do that bring joy and fulfillment in my life:

1. I love to play. I know this is a no-brainer for a lot of people, but I am serious about playing. I think when we play well, we get to experience a certain part of the kingdom of God now. Whether a stupid game with friends my own age, or a competitive soccer game with kids in 4th grade, play is a key building block at the beginning of relationships. I challenge you to think of a more universal language than play.

2. People. I love people also. This question is hard to answer right now because over the past 6 months I have been walking in a particularly hard and unhealthy friendship (and Covid). But I really do care about people and love being able to make new friends and enjoy old ones as well. Even when relationships are hard and change (as I have seen recently) I still love them.

3. Creating. This happens to be my major, but even as a kid I was very passionate about building designing, and creating things. As I have gotten older I have seen this in problem-solving, creating solutions (engineering).

Who I love to work with most, and the age or type of people:

I love to work with people my own age and kids! I potentially Love highschoolers as well although I haven’t had much interest in working with them, I love the simplicity and Joy that can be found when young. And with people my own age I love the depth and complexity that can be explored, as well as the fun of the adventure to be had.

Church issues, ministries, or possible needs that excite or concern me the most:

Community is by far my biggest concern with a church, does it offers community. Selfishly I probably wonder if I have community, and then secondly, I wonder if it offers community for those who have a harder time finding it.

Your Primary was ‘The Otter’, with your Secondary coming in as ‘The Retriever’, and here are the descriptions of your Personalities, and how they can be used for God

Otter- Otters are very social creature. Otter personalities love people. They enjoys being popular and influencing and motivating others. Otter can sometimes be hurt when people do not like them. Otter personalities usually have lots of friends, but not deep relationships. They love to goof-off. (They are notorious for messy rooms.) Otters like to hurry and finish jobs. (Jobs are not often done well.) The otter personality is like Tigger in Winnie The Pooh.

Strength: People person, open, positive
Weakness: Talks too much, too permissive
Limitation: Remembering past commitments, follow through with discipline

Golden Retriever- Good at making friends. Very loyal. Retriever personalities do not like big changes. They look for security. Can be very sensitive. Very caring. Has deep relationships, but usually only a couple of close friends. Wants to be loved by everyone. Looks for appreciation. Works best in a limited situation with a steady work pattern.

Strength: Accommodating, calm, affirming
Weakness: Indecisive, indifferent, unable to express emotional, too soft on other people
Limitation: Seeing the need to be more assertive, holding others accountable

[E]xperience

My brief testimony of how I became a Christian

I was actually born into a Christian Family. But I really started taking my faith into my own hands around the time of High-School. I think fear was a very large part of my early faith, and around High-school I started trying to wrestle love in them instead. There are no Specific sharp points of change, just slow and steady growth guided by deep friendships and many mentorships (as well as many camps).

Ministry Experience (Where I have served in the past, if applicable, including ChurchName, City/State, Position, Years Involved):

Glorieta Camps, Group Camp Consoler.

List 3 Positive experiences from the past that made a big impact on who you are today:

My youth Interns/ministers. My youth interns/ministers have been the largest positive impact in my life. They took me under their wing and guided me towards Christ.

Church Camp! The camp was always a place where I was challenged and had depth and brotherhood.

Friend Groups. I have always been someone who has had a multitude of friends and a close circle of deep friends. Through walking with me

List 3 Negative Experiences from your past that have helped to Shape me, but also have given you great compassion for others going through similar circumstances:

Pornography has been a large part of my walk with christ. It has been (and still is) a place of constant wrestling with God and the flesh. From this thought, I have grown immensely, and have a lot of compassion for those who are also wrestling.

In past months I have had a really challenging time with one of my roommates. He has spoken harsh and hurtful things against me, as well as a multitude of other things ( I will not pretend to claim I have handled this perfectly, I have made mistakes too). From it, however, I am learning a different side of Love, a hard, slow, and painful side with no easy answers. Although this is not over, I believe God will use it to grow me (as he already is).

Building relationships as a Kid has also been a challenge. But I learned how to make friends in the awkwardness and hard situations. I hope that I will always remember the times I didn’t fit in and have compassion for those who don’t currently fit in.

Wrapping It Up

The Challenge: Based upon your S.H.A.P.E. Assessment above (the way God wired you), If you knew you couldn’t fail … and ‘lack of money, or time’ was not an obstacle… list your Top 3 Things you would ‘Focus’ your Life on, next to #1 Loving God & #2 Loving Your Neighbor (these would be your ‘3 God-Sized Dreams’ for your life)?

1. My Relationship with GOD

2. My Relationship with Others

  • Putting Your Spouse First
  • Your Kids Second
  • Everyone Else After those

3. Opening a coffee shop where we hire inmates, or using it as a tool for ministry, maybe the homeless, I’m not quiet sure.

4. Using Engineering in a domestic and abroad missional way. Whether doing stuff to better the planet or other people, using engineering skills to better the world.

5. Always, Always, Always working with students of some sort, within the church.
