[E]xperience

When I was very young, I always wanted to follow the rules because that was how I would gain people’s favor, so I assumed that was how I would gain God’s favor too. I learned about Jesus’s saving work on the cross and about His defeat of death. I saw that others around me weren’t following the rules because they had to in order to earn God’s favor, but because they wanted to out of worship. I decided that I wanted to be a Christian too, and I learned that I could receive grace for all those times when I messed up. Then I wanted to follow the rules because I was thankful for salvation and a new identity in Christ.
