I most love to work with adults who are keen to grow spiritually. I am most effective in doing this with people from cultures other than my own, and I prefer doing so with young and middle-aged adults.

I am passionate about sound teaching (not so much doctrinal minutiae), and love to do this in overseas settings. I particularly enjoy teaching those who are impoverished, with minimal education, and living in remote places where opportunities for learning are very limited.

[E]xperience

I was led to the Lord by my father when I was five years old, and have never wandered from a solid commitment to live as a Christian.

I have been a missionary with Christians in Action for over 40 years, serving initially in Sierra Leone (for 17 years), and subsequently stationed in England for the purpose of making regular trips into Africa. Sometimes those missions are done alone, sometimes leading a team, and sometimes participating on a team.

As a missionary, I have been a church planter and pastor (though I do not consider myself gifted in those positions).
I have managed and taught in a church leadership training programme.
I have participated on and chaired church councils and committees.
I have served on my mission’s International Leadership Council, was treasurer of the Evangelical Fellowship of Sierra Leone, and currently serve as chairman of a UK-based charity called Support EFSL (which funds ministry projects in Sierra Leone).

I also preach and teach occasionally in whatever church I happen to be attending.

Believing God answered my prayer when I was still a pre-schooler, leading me to a lifelong conviction that God hears and answers prayer, and is interested in me.

Being on the fringes of the Jesus People movement in the 1970s, and being inspired by the power of their testimonies and their enthusiasm for worship and sharing their faith with others.

Being convinced of a call to missions when I was 18 years old, and feeling an affinity for Black (and later African) people through exposure to them for the first time while in missionary training.

Being amongst the youngest and smallest in my classes all the way through school, I was always on the outside socially and in sports. But, this gave me an ability to appreciate solitude, and it made my relationship with the Lord more central to my being than it might otherwise have been.

I had an opportunity to witness to a classmate in high school, but failed due to my timidity. A few months later he drowned. My sense of guilt and failure led me to take active steps to learn how to confidently share my faith, which in turn led to me being called to be a missionary.

Through taking a principled stand (around the age of 50), I was slandered and libelled by an opposing faction on the mission field, and ignored and sidelined by my mission agency. This led to a deepening of my walk with the Lord, and the debilitating effects of this continuing for more than two years increased my empathy for those struggling with depression and other mental health issues.

Wrapping It Up
