This gift’s evident in my life in the following ways:
I love the Bible and when I just became a Christian I found myself always wanting to understand what it said more. One day in prayer while I was asking God what I should do with my life, he gave me the word “educate” but I had no idea what it meant. A few years later I have found myself in seminary, studying his word and it is sooo BEAUTIFUL! I’ve recently been questioning if I really have been called to teach…I feel uncertain that I heard right and even in doing this I am asking myself if I have somehow skewed these results. I have never taught in an official capacity so I don’t know if I would be any good at it, but I enjoy learning about God and his word a lot.

In my family I used to be called on a lot to encourage one particular cousin. I never thought of myself as being an encourager though, but now that I am thinking about it I can see a pattern of that in some of my friendships.

[H]eart

1. School – I love being in an environment where I get to talk about God and the Bible, Christian life – a place where I can ask and explore so many questions.

2. Create – I love creating through dance and other arts. It makes my brain relax and I think it’s a privilege that God has granted me a small portion of His own creativity. It’s really beautiful.

3. Worship – this gives me so much joy and God often speaks to me through song (heart/spirit songs). I love to sing but am not good at it. When I’m by myself though I have a ball with God singing and when I need to be ministered to this I find is the way God touches those things in me I prefer to hide.

I really want Churches to get into Bible Study in a serious way again. I believe Bible literacy for the lay person is crucial (I am also grateful for this iBelieve series at church. It’s so crucial that we know what we believe). Personally in my earlier Christian years I really hungered for a space where I could sit and read the Bible in a meticulous way with others; maybe because of my natural tendency to want to know what things mean. I hope to one day even write Bible Study guides.

[E]xperience

I accepted Jesus while standing in the dark in my mom’s living room one night in 2013/2014. Reflecting on that night now, the darkness I stood in seems so symbolic for my spiritual darkness up to that point. It was also a dark time in my life in general having just come out of an emotionally unhealthy and manipulative relationship, moving back into a home I tried for years to escape, with a mother who I yearned to have a close relationship with but just could not seem to get along with. This was a period of searching for me as I believed there was a god but didn’t know Jesus. Shortly after I moved back in my mom was diagnosed with incurable cancer. Jesus found me through a colleague I was friends with at the time. She was then the only Christian I knew who was relatable. We bonded over our shared interest in photography and art. She introduced me to Christ one day that year while I sat outside of the Tony Thwaites wing after one of my mom’s operations. That same night, I called her and told her I wanted to commit to this Christ she told me about.

Being accept and loved by TLC’s Dance ministry. These women have impacted my life in such a powerful way and God has really used them to bring healing to me especially surrounding the loss of my mother.

Attending TLC. This community has been like a well of spiritual water to me. I’m grateful for the time I’ve spent in it.

Losing my mom to cancer in 2016. That event not only impacted me emotionally but changed the entire trajectory of my life. God has used even this for good in my life…It helps me to connect with people who face loss.

Being in an emotionally unhealthy and manipulative relationship. I don’t like to use the word abuse because in a way I feel I not only allowed it but partnered with it. I find I’m pretty passionate about other women who are in abusive or controlling relationships now as well.

Not being able to keep a job for a long time. This has made me feel inadequate and like I don’t belong anywhere. I realized recently that a part of my issue stems from unresolved mother wounds.
