#1 Gift, Exhortation/Encouragement (100%)

This gift’s evident in my life in the following ways:
I’m called to strengthen people and encourage them throughout their walk with Christ. I’m called to motivate people to help build up the body of Christ so that we can make much of Jesus and glorify God.

#2 Gift, Evangelism (96%)

This gift’s evident in my life in the following ways:
I’m gifted with this to spread the “good news” of Jesus Christ to those who are lost and I’m able to overlook the fear of rejection from unbelievers. God put on my heart a desire to reach the unreachable and follow the lead of the Holy Spirit to help win people for Christ.

#3 Gift, Pastoring/Shepherding (96%)

This gift’s evident in my life in the following ways:
I enjoy protecting and looking after the church as a shepherd does with their sheep, so I believe I’m gifted with this because my heart “beats” to care for people who are wounded, sick, hurt, addicted or recovering. I have this gift because I desire to strengthen the spiritual and emotional well-being of God’s people. I have this gift because I want to serve the church and I want to help guide them to the plan that God has for them.

[H]eart

Three things I love to do that bring joy and fulfillment in my life:

1. Joining God’s plan to connect the unconnected to Jesus Christ. I enjoy praying for them, establishing relationships with people, listening to others and encouraging them to take their next step to free them from their afflictions so they can live our their identity in Christ. I enjoy helping people see that healing happens in community as they connect to other people and commit to a process. I have a heart for hurting people and a passion to help them take the best next step to connect them to Christ, Community and their Calling.

2. I enjoy helping people connect to community (e.g. life groups, men or women table groups and etc.). I enjoy clearing the path, pointing the way and walking with people to take their next step to join community. I find joy and fulfillment seeing God work in the lives of people who make community a priority in their lives. I especially enjoy helping people move from crisis to community.

3. I enjoy equipping people with the tools to get care, grow and recover by pointing them to hope and encouragement that is only found in Jesus Christ. I enjoy encouraging, extending compassion and serving others to help them improve their emotional/spiritual health.

Who I love to work with most, and the age or type of people:

I enjoy working with people from all backgrounds and I do not have a preferred age or type of person, however God put serving the needs of adults on my heart.

Church issues, ministries, or possible needs that excite or concern me the most:

I genuinely enjoy Care Ministry (e.g. family/marriage counseling, care groups, community groups, Pastor on Call and etc.) because it combines my gifting from God and it follows what God has put on my heart (i.e. to help lead hurting people from crisis into healthy biblical community). Further, it allows me to help people to strengthen their mental and spiritual health by using my knowledge of clinical behavioral health best practices.

Your Primary was ‘The Retriever’, with your Secondary coming in as ‘The Otter’, and here are the descriptions of your Personalities, and how they can be used for God

Golden Retriever- Good at making friends. Very loyal. Retriever personalities do not like big changes. They look for security. Can be very sensitive. Very caring. Has deep relationships, but usually only a couple of close friends. Wants to be loved by everyone. Looks for appreciation. Works best in a limited situation with a steady work pattern.

Strength: Accommodating, calm, affirming
Weakness: Indecisive, indifferent, unable to express emotional, too soft on other people
Limitation: Seeing the need to be more assertive, holding others accountable

Otter- Otters are very social creature. Otter personalities love people. They enjoys being popular and influencing and motivating others. Otter can sometimes be hurt when people do not like them. Otter personalities usually have lots of friends, but not deep relationships. They love to goof-off. (They are notorious for messy rooms.) Otters like to hurry and finish jobs. (Jobs are not often done well.) The otter personality is like Tigger in Winnie The Pooh.

Strength: People person, open, positive
Weakness: Talks too much, too permissive
Limitation: Remembering past commitments, follow through with discipline

[E]xperience

My brief testimony of how I became a Christian

I became a Christian in 1996 shortly after my girlfriend, now wife, decided to share the Gospel with me. My heart was immediately softened to the Word and I knew God was telling me I needed to leave my ways, pick up my cross and follow Him. I was baptized shortly after and began my walk with Christ. I attended church multiple times per week, began to read and praying daily, volunteered so serve (e.g. church, camp, and etc.), and regularly attended conferences to enrich my growth and understanding of Him. I have experience leading, shepherding, and planning Christian events, however my involvement at times is limited since each time was on a volunteer basis since I work full time outside of a ministry setting. My walk has been solid since, however I felt God telling me to serve more and go deeper with my faith in August of 2008 and since I’ve been following God’s call for my life.

Ministry Experience (Where I have served in the past, if applicable, including ChurchName, City/State, Position, Years Involved):

Northside Christian Church, New Albany, IN, Pastoral Care Intern, 1.5 years.

Northside Christian Church, New Albany, IN, 19 years
(Baptism Team Member, Prepare/Enrich Mentor, Worship team volunteer, Outreach volunteer, Small Group Leader and Greeter)

List 3 Positive experiences from the past that made a big impact on who you are today:

2008: I was in the Army and we were not deeply connected to a church family, but we were attending church and some new chaplains had just arrived and I felt God pulling at my heart to pursue ministry full-time. Since that moment, I’ve been serving in the local churches wherever I was stationed, however I look back on the time since and I see God preparing me for the full-time ministry position I’m applying for at Northside.

2006: I took my first leadership role in the Army and I quickly realized how many people struggle with a variety of things of things in life that I had little experience or knowledge of (e.g. criminal activity, marital obstacles, addiction, mental health challenges and etc.). As an officer and especially as a commander, I had to focus on protecting the command, so I often could not talk to soldiers candidly to help them receive Christ-centered care. Looking back on this season of my life, I see God preparing me to help those in crisis by exposing me to a wide variety of challenges and breaking my heart for people in need of hope or encouragement that can only be found in Christ.

2010: Jill and I were studying with some friends when we were stationed in Arizona and we quickly realized how important community was. Jill and I quickly realized that we were able to effectively grow closer to God and other Christians as a direct result of our small group. There was fellowship, support, care and healing in our community, so we immediately joined a small group at Northside when we moved back to Indiana later that year. Since, we’ve been in a small group where we’ve seen God move in amazing ways in our lives and the lives of those in our small group.

List 3 Negative Experiences from your past that have helped to Shape me, but also have given you great compassion for others going through similar circumstances:

In 2011, we lost 35 soldiers in Afghanistan and not only were soldiers killed, but their families back home were changed forever. It was challenging to see these 35 soldiers die in battle along with the many others who were wounded, but God put on my heart a desire to help families like these and others who find themselves in crisis. I learned a lot about sudden or unexpected deaths and it enabled me to share with others how I overcame that experience by relying on God and my small group community to share my life with. When people know someone who dies, their reactions vary greatly and this situation gave me the compassion to support people who react a variety of ways in response to a sudden or unexpected death.

In 2006, our first son was born and we had no idea what we were doing. In short, his birth was very difficult and he spent weeks in the hospital. At one point he was released and praise God Jill’s mom discovered something was wrong and we barely got our son to the hospital in time to prevent permanent brain damage. Since our son has lived with a variety of challenges and in the moment we were terrified that he would not live. This moment enabled be to develop great compassion for families when the have a child that may die or has died. Thankfully our son lived, but I know the feeling of not knowing how to proceed and wondering if our son was going to survive. Further, our son has special needs and I simply love working with other parents who also have special needs children. It enables me to “speak their language” and better understand their daily challenges of caring for their children. In these moments, it’s easy to think “where is God in all of this” and my experience or pain can be used to point these families towards the hope of the great physician.

Beginning in 2005, I joined the Army and began my career that cause me to spend year away from my family so I could strengthen the US Army and defend our country from threats. As a direct result, I have missed approximately 6 years of time with my wife and children, so I know what it’s like to be away from them for extended periods of time (i.e. one period was nearly 2 years long). I am dedicated to making my family a priority and after missing much of their lives, I am more dedicated to protecting my family time. This period in my life prepared me to be a counselor with great compassion for families that are not able to spend time together on a regular basis. I have a great compassion for families and quality family time, so I am an effective advocate for family time, however I can also discuss best practices for families who are temporarily separated from their loved ones (i.e. spouse goes on 12 month deployment). This experience makes me a better counselor and enables me to help people see that relying on God is a must during these moments.

Wrapping It Up

The Challenge: Based upon your S.H.A.P.E. Assessment above (the way God wired you), If you knew you couldn’t fail … and ‘lack of money, or time’ was not an obstacle… list your Top 3 Things you would ‘Focus’ your Life on, next to #1 Loving God & #2 Loving Your Neighbor (these would be your ‘3 God-Sized Dreams’ for your life)?

1. My Relationship with GOD

2. My Relationship with Others

  • Putting Your Spouse First
  • Your Kids Second
  • Everyone Else After those

3. I want to spend the rest of my adult life (30+ years) serving Northside by providing pastoral care and helping people in Crisis. God put helping people find hope and encouragement that can only be found in Jesus Christ. I want to dedicate my time serving the pastoral counseling needs of the church to help people overcome their obstacles.

4. Build a robust Christ-centered counseling team at Northside that provides short-term and solution-focused pastoral counseling.

5. Spend time continuously improving Northside’s marriage enrichment program so that families are equipped to live out God’s plan for their marriage in our Genesis 3 world that often does not align with the Bible.
