[E]xperience

I grew up in Catholic Church so was a Christian by mouth but did not really see the difference between my lifestyle and that of an unbeliever. Then at 16 I met my childhood best friend whose parents continuously invited me to church where they were pastors. That’s when I was able to build a relationship with God for myself, find out who he is to me, fasted for the first timeand got baptised

Best friend, Friendship breakup ( although we are friends now) – Hannah family was all I knew for 10 years of my life, but I believe God wanted me to separate for a while to find myself and build a life of my own, of which I now have.

Failing first year of uni – this built resilience in me as I was working three jobs at a time because I didn’t want tell my parents I wasn’t in university for the second year, so I stayed in Leicester and found myself a work placement in drug and alcohol rehabilitation whilst working at a bank and an insurance company.

Coming out of a season of not working for seven months. In this time God taught me another level of humility and faith.

I am the last of 7 children to parents who were pastors. AT age 9 I realized that I needed my own God, and I responded to an altar call in a Sunday Night service.

I grew up going to a Baptist/Brethren church nearly every Sunday, except during planting and harvest seasons. Baptized as a believer at age 12 or 13. I didn’t attend church very often while going to college and early in our marriage. We started regularly attending a Baptist church around 2000-2001 after our daughter was born, but before our son was born. I started to read the Bible regularly in my early 40’s . Having degrees in Wildlife Biology and Natural History, what I thought I knew about evolution and the deep age of our planet and universe held me back in my faith journey. Then I came across a video on YouTube where an unknown Creationist (Frank Turek) was debating a world known atheist (Christopher Hitchens). I was absolutely amazed at how much science and historical evidence there is to back up what we read in Genesis (and other Old Testament books) as well as Biblical history. Then I read his book “I Don’t Have Enough Faith To Be An Atheist” where I learned that most scientific data over the last 30 years actually goes again macro evolution and deep time. None of these scientific facts that refute evolution and confirm creation were ever brought even ONCE up in my four years at college. Everything finally made sense to me, and my faith has grown drastically over the 12 years.

First Baptist Church, Charles City. Served several terms as a Trustee, one term as a Deacon (Elder), and regularly attended and participated in Advisory Council meetings. Was Treasurer for one year. I resigned mostly due to the wholesale nursery that I worked for closed. I ended up finding employment out of town for four years where I worked a lot of evenings and weekends. Was on a Pastor hiring committee. Chairperson for the Constitution Committee formed to redo the churches constitution. Taught Faith and Reason class once. After two years of trying to make minor suggestions from the inside (while not trying to completely disrupt the church) we finally resigned from all of our positions in June of 2022. We did meet with the Pastor and Head Deacon (Elder) to discuss the 4 or 5 major Biblical issues that we saw with the church. It was one of the hardest, but also best, decisions that I’ve made in my life thus far. My daughter and son-in-law actually played an important role in leaving First Baptist and finding a more Biblical church.

I am definitely blessed to have met Sandy in college and to have been married to her for 30 years. Her soft demeanor has helped me change over the years.

Growing up on a farm with a big, loving family. We didn’t have much, yet we had everything that we needed and more.

Growing up as a poor 80’s farm kid, with a large family, during the farm crisis taught me to work hard and be conservative with our finances. I have compassion for kids whose families may also have little.

The college debt that Sandy and I had after graduating from UNI took nearly 10 years to overcome. It was hard back then struggling to pay the bills while living in a tiny one-bedroom apartment in Cedar Falls for seven years, but we did it. Looking back, I would not have done it any other way.

Losing a job that I loved as a plant buyer due to another company purchasing the business, then closing it. It helped me to not try and control my circumstances as much and live more day to day.

I went to church, occasionally, as a child. We attended a Methodist Church. I went to church camp a few times, as well. It wasn’t until I met Rick and began periodically attending the Baptist Brethren Church in Fredericksburg, that I started to become more exposed to Christianity. The pastor at that time really made strong connections with the bible and how we should apply to our daily life. When Rick and I moved to Charles City, we started attending the First Baptist Church. We became really involved in many of the church ministries. After several years, we attended a small group bible study called The Purpose Driven Life. During that bible study, I really began to examine my life and my purpose. It was around that time that I decided to cross the faith line and become baptized. I was thirty years old at the time.

All of my teaching experiences have helped shape me. I have taught in a parochial school, a small school district, and a larger school district. This has given me a variety of experiences with staff, students, and families.

Being a mother has had a huge impact on my life. It has taught me so many life lessons about compassion, endurance, patience, encouragement, etc. The Lord has guided me through all of these experiences.

When I met Rick, I was still struggling with the loss of my mother and a broken family dynamic. His family was very welcoming and loving. In a way, I feel like Rick saved me from going down the wrong path. We have been married, now, for 30 years. Looking back, I feel proud of the modest life we have lived and the two wonderful kids we have raised. I hope that we can continue to lead a strong Christian life.

My mother committed suicide when I was only 12 years old. This experience was very difficult to endure. Not only do I have compassion for those who have lost others to suicide, but I have a compassion for those who suffer depression. I have experienced depression in my adult life. I feel that I have developed some tools that might assist someone else who may be experiencing similar feelings.

I was an extremely introverted person, as a child and into my early adult stages of life. I would shake when I had to speak in front of more than two people. I had to go on anxiety medication to help with the situation. As time went on, I began to feel more confident with myself and came out of my shell. I feel that I have compassion for others who experience these same characteristics. I seek out people who seem to be on the sidelines or are hesitant to speak to others. I want them to feel comfortable and important.

I have a family member who is very negative. She puts down people intentionally. I have a compassion about being positive and trying to bring out the best in people. I do not let her negativity bring me down. I pray for God to help her have a change of heart.
