My brief testimony of how I became a Christian

Had attended Vacation Bible Camps as a child and learned about the gospel through those camps. Went on to attend a youth group with a family member and became saved at the age of 17 after realizing that I did not have a personal relationship with Jesus and needed Him as my personal Lord and Saviour.

Ministry Experience (Where I have served in the past, if applicable, including ChurchName, City/State, Position, Years Involved):

Southside – Nursery / Prepared Communion for the Congregation / Served on Board to get Daycare operational (5 years??)

DCC – Sunday School / Care Meals / WM / Devon Days / Pastoral Selection Committee / Small Group Host (off and on for 20 years??)

List 3 Positive experiences from the past that made a big impact on who you are today:

Parenting — Raising children to have integrity and good character in a world where both are lacking has always made me question my own decisions, thoughts, and how I live my life (actions) so that I can be a good example to my children.

Mingling with the elderly on a regular basis has given me great compassion for those that are less fortunate and lonely.

Learning a long time ago that God hears every prayer

#1 Gift, Teaching (90%)

This gift’s evident in my life in the following ways:
I am a good teacher because I am enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I make things easy to understand by use of metaphors and real life examples as well as personal experiences. I am also artistic and musical and have a sense of humor.

#2 Gift, Evangelism (87%)

This gift’s evident in my life in the following ways:
I am comfortable telling my story of how Jesus has saved and blessed me and the world through his sacrifice. I am knowledgeable of the Gospel and would be happy to share it with non believers or new believers. I can be an engaging speaker and I allow the Spirit to help me say what needs to be heard. I am also a sensitive listener to those who question and I am happy to share God’s truth in a way that is neither threatening or off-putting.

#3 Gift, Giving (75%)

This gift’s evident in my life in the following ways:
I have decided to tithe obediently as God has called us to do. I trust that my church will use the funds for a variety of worthy causes. I would like to give more of my time to the church and am looking for the best fit that suits my strengths.

[H]eart

Three things I love to do that bring joy and fulfillment in my life:

1. I love learning more about God’s word and sharing it with others. I have been blessed to be surrounded by other believers at home and work.

2. I love music. I am a good singer and piano player and I could also be a good writer of music and lyrics. I have been in lots of choirs and plays and musicals over the years.

3. I love drawing. My profession is architect. I specialize in church buildings. I enjoy it. Especially the creative design part of it. I am also a cartoonist and have the drawing skill and sense of humor to create some great cartoons over the years.

Who I love to work with most, and the age or type of people:

I am 55 but I tend to be more youthful and seem to connect well with those who are a bit younger than I am (like the 30 to 40 year olds). I can share my life experiences and knowledge with those who are less knowledgeable about the Bible and the Gospel. I think I would be a good mentor for a new Christian or someone who reminds me of myself 20 years ago. I would also be comfortable leading a table at Alpha. I would love to be a counsellor to someone who is struggling with their faith or perhaps with their career or marriage or family. I have learned a lot and been blessed by my own difficult past experiences. I would love to help others who are searching or struggling. Also I was divorced and remarried and would be very willing to counsel someone who is going through that.

Church issues, ministries, or possible needs that excite or concern me the most:

My wife and I loved Alpha! We would be willing to lead a table group in the next session of Alpha. We also very much appreciate our Bible Studies at the church and have learned a great deal from the leaders and other participants. We will continue to do this. I am very impressed with the music at the church. Worship is always very well planned and the music is very moving. I like how the music combines contemporary and old traditional songs and the themes are always on point with the sermon of the day and the scriptures. The choir and orchestra and dramas are always awesome!

My brief testimony of how I became a Christian

I was born into a Christian family. My dad was a Lutheran minister. I had a wonderful childhood and church was a regular part of it. But I was basically coasting. My faith was shallow. After 25 years of marriage my (ex) wife divorced me. It was an ugly experience for all of us (including my two adult children). But this forced me to get on my knees and turn to God in a deeper way with total surrender. I began attending a more vibrant church and reading my Bible and Christian authors. I met a woman who had a similar story as mine and we together have grown spiritually immensely. God has been so good to me and helped me through many hardships. I now would like to take what I have learned to help others.

Ministry Experience (Where I have served in the past, if applicable, including ChurchName, City/State, Position, Years Involved):

Choir director at Advent Lutheran Church from 1996 to 2006 in Calgary.

Choir member at Bethany Chapel in Calgary from 2010 to 2013 (including musicals, oratorios etc)

List 3 Positive experiences from the past that made a big impact on who you are today:

Loving and supportive family. Especially through the hardship of my divorce.

Supportive mentors and clients during my career as an Architect.

Amazing wife of 4 years who shares my passions and desire to know more about Jesus and the Word and how to share our gifts.

List 3 Negative Experiences from your past that have helped to Shape me, but also have given you great compassion for others going through similar circumstances:

Lutheran minister Dad always too busy to give any time or attention to his children. I would like to be a mentor or father figure to someone who is lacking like I was.

Architecture career very volatile due to the volatile economy. I had been laid off and changed jobs often. Architecture school was brutal The career has many pitfalls. I would like to counsel someone struggling in similar ways.

Family Break Down. Divorce. Children who drift away from God. I would like to counsel people going through similar circumstances (i.e. husbands and Dads) and share what I have learned and how God used the negatives to make me a better person and how I still lean on Him with the ongoing challenges.
