My brief testimony of how I became a Christian

I was raised in a Christian home. During a week long revival at my church when I was ten, I accepted Christ as my Savior and was baptized on Christmas Day of that year. As a teenager and college student, I began growing in Christ’s Lordship as I participated in Bible studies and personal quiet times with God.

Ministry Experience (Where I have served in the past, if applicable, including ChurchName, City/State, Position, Years Involved):

As a preachers daughter, I served in my home church from the nursery, to playing the piano, to youth choir, to VBS, to teaching my own Church Training class whenever there was not a teacher.

During my years as a single woman, I was involved in a small church in which I now know I did more than I should have. I participated in teaching adults, singing solos and choir, working with GA’s, and on various committees.

As a ministry wife, I have served in many capacities over our 33 years in the eight places we have served. These involved multiple activities with varying ages in Music Ministry, VBS, Children’s Ministry, Preschool Ministry, Women’s Ministry, and Discipleship/Sunday School.

List 3 Positive experiences from the past that made a big impact on who you are today:

I watched my mother accept Christ as a pastor’s wife when I was in high school and be baptized by my father. As she grew in her relationship with Christ, she modeled being a Proverbs 31 woman in many ways for me with a quiet, humble spirit.

Seeing and hearing my father pray for us during his quiet times each morning and leading us in family devotions instilled in me a strong sense of the importance of prayer and quiet times with God as an individual and a family,

Growing up in a church with many military families coming and going which were warmly welcomed by my parents into our church and home caused me to be open to and accepting of the differences in others. Mom also instilled in me a love of books and learning that continues to affect me today.

List 3 Negative Experiences from your past that have helped to Shape me, but also have given you great compassion for others going through similar circumstances:

Being single longer than I had planned makes me more sensitive to others’ struggle with this. Yet, it caused me to develop skills and independence I would need for the many times I have had to keep the home fires going when my husband is in the midst of ministry.

Struggles with acceptance and insecurity throughout my life have caused me to be sensitive to those who seem lonely or left out in a group or crowd. It has further allowed me to dwell on who God says I am and drawn me closer to Him as He is teaching me to be more of an encourager than a pessimist.

Having battled depression during one season of my life in which I needed professional help has led me to have more empathy and understanding for those who battle emotional issues.

Wrapping It Up

The Challenge: Based upon your S.H.A.P.E. Assessment above (the way God wired you), If you knew you couldn’t fail … and ‘lack of money, or time’ was not an obstacle… list your Top 3 Things you would ‘Focus’ your Life on, next to #1 Loving God & #2 Loving Your Neighbor (these would be your ‘3 God-Sized Dreams’ for your life)?

1. My Relationship with GOD

2. My Relationship with Others

  • Putting Your Spouse First
  • Your Kids Second
  • Everyone Else After those

3. I would seek multiple means by which to mentor women of various ages and life experiences in their growth in Christ.

4. I would go on multiple mission trips at home and abroad.

5. I would share what God has taught me and is teaching me through writing for and speaking to women.

[E]xperience

My brief testimony of how I became a Christian

I still recall the day the Lord called me unto Himself. I had been attending a variety of churches, but one Sunday, in a Southern Baptist Church, the pastor’s sermon touched my heart, and I went forward giving my life to Christ.

Ministry Experience (Where I have served in the past, if applicable, including ChurchName, City/State, Position, Years Involved):

Emmanuel Baptist Church, Mount Vernon, Washington – Adult Sunday School Teacher – 5 years

Immanuel Baptist Church, Hoquiam, Washington – Adult Sunday School Teacher – 2 years; Deacon – 2 years; Elder – 3 years; Church Chairman, 2 years; Summer VBS Teacher, 2 years

List 3 Positive experiences from the past that made a big impact on who you are today:

Being mentored by spiritually mature Christian brother for two years following my acceptance of the Lord.

Marrying my wife, who is a wonderful example of Christian woman – and her family. especially her Dad, who is also a wonderful example of Christian.

My career path – I owe it all to God – and every experience has helped to mold me into who I am today.

List 3 Negative Experiences from your past that have helped to Shape me, but also have given you great compassion for others going through similar circumstances:

At my very first church, where I was saved, the Pastor (whom I loved dearly) had an affair with the Associate Pastor’s wife. I was broken-hearted, confused, and Ihad to learn to place my faith in Christ and His word.

As a school principal and superintendent, I have had experiences with family break-ups, poverty, suicide, schools burning down, financial cliffs, working with a variety of people in improvement efforts, and finding ways to support children.
