This gift’s evident in my life in the following ways:
I feel drawn to the emotionally needy and am attuned to their emotions: loneliness, sorrow, despair, and so on. It’s easy for me to like even my challenging students, and they respond with warmth and trust.

This gift’s evident in my life in the following ways:
Sometimes the Lord takes over my heart and mouth, giving me His words at just the right time for my children or my friends. And the words hit the mark, strengthening and building up, though they may also be like bitter medicine.

This gift’s evident in my life in the following ways:
I enjoy supporting the spread of God’s kingdom among the spiritually dead. They welcome his freedom & forgiveness! Tithing brings me satisfaction because I’m taking a stand in my everyday choices about the truth that God comes first.

[H]eart

1. Instructing my children by drawing out what’s in their hearts or on their minds; listening to them; affirming them and speaking scriptural truths to consider alongside their own opinions, thoughts, and beliefs. Sometimes I really challenge them.

2. Connecting with others, especially connecting deeply, first with God, then with committed followers of Jesus. Also, connecting with those who don’t expect it, like my students, my neighbors, or the prison ministry. (looking forward to starting that)

3. I’m not sure about a third one. Singing on the praise team, maybe, because we help everyone to worship together.

I like teenagers (my students are mostly teenage boys; many have little education). I’d like to visit the sick, elderly, and imprisoned.

1. Jesus sets us free. Christians who don’t experience that give a limited witness to his power, when the people around us are settling for cheap imitations of joy (possessions, appearance, vacations, ambition). I want my fellow believers to recognize the profound freedom and healing available to them! Then we will be better equipped to present Jesus to a hurting world.
2. I want us to see the needs of people right here in Fairfax County: the imprisoned and their children; the hungry; the unloved.
3. Let’s take Jesus to the world by loving the profoundly needy who are far away. Feed My Starving Children is a good way to do that. Let’s relieve physical needs so that people’s minds are freed up and open to hear the Gospel.

I grasp students’ proficiency and create materials at that level, with visuals to enhance understanding. I have attended Entrust4 training in facilitating Bible studies by asking questions, so that people are more invested and get involved from the heart, which is where the Lord wants to deal with us.

Relationship skills: I’m not put off by appearances, not easily shocked by behavior, see with God’s eyes (his doing, not mine), encourage and build rapport.

[E]xperience

I had some deep wounds from family wounds as a child, and looked to the world for answers. This led to more problems and dissatisfaction until I admitted that only God was big enough to deal with my life. I started reading the Bible and joined a Bible study. One day, while reading testimonies online, everything clicked: I understood why Jesus died on the cross, that he did it for me personally, and that my sins were forgiven. I thanked him and said I’d follow him for the rest of my life.

My mother loved God, taught me that he is holy, gave generously, and treated with dignity those less fortunate or troubled.

I went to Taiwan after finishing college, and that changed the trajectory of my life. I see that a lot of things about people are just taught by culture and experience, which helps me relate to others despite differences.

God has put wonderful mentors in my life! For the most part, they are single women, but there are a few married ones. Either way, they have helped me to love God by showing me how to love my family and my children.

Emotional turmoil as a child, because of my father’s addictions. This was so extremely negative that I know God is even more extremely positive. It makes my faith stronger.

An abusive marriage, a problem which encompasses despair, etc. But God has redeemed this as a way to connect with others who don’t have hope.

Divorce and my mother’s death happening in the same month. For 6 months, I felt completely adrift in grief, like every relational mooring or sense of direction was gone.
